ANNOUNCEMENTS Passion for Writing - By Melissa DeLucaBeing a novelist is the "write" life for Deanna Fei.
On Friday June 17, 2011, Fendi Baxter, winner of the 2011 USA Today Dream Job Essay Challenge, accompanied by her teacher Mr. Morales and two English honors students (Sallishah Ali and Melissa DeLuca) had a two-hour chat with Deanna Fei, author of A Thread of Sky.
Junior Fendi Baxter had won a USA Today contest in which she had to write about her career aspirations, and she chose writing. The prize was a meeting with an expert in the chosen field.
Fei gave her background story. As a Chinese-American, she was asked both in the U.S. and China, where she lived for a year, where her "home" was, so it was hard for her to feel that she belonged anywhere. This lifelong ordeal led to questions about identity, and inspired her to write her book.
She continued with her experience in writing. "Writing is a mix of experiencing life and observing it. You need to go and see the world so your writing can grow, but at the same time, if you're a queen bee, you will never be uncomfortable enough to look at life from a different angle. Sometimes your face has to be pressed against the glass, looking in."
She advises aspiring writers to be disciplined. ""It's all about commitment," she stresses. "Like an old professor of mine used to say, 'If you cannot be happy without writing as a major part of your life, than you must do it.' It takes a lot of time and hard work, so be sure it gives you fulfillment. Write because you love to. Publishing is nice, but what really makes a writing career rewarding is the actual process of writing."
Fei was kind enough to give us each a signed copy of her book as well as donate several copies of her book to the Lehman High School library.
